Spotlight of the Month: Solange Knowles

Natural hair has become a world-wide movement and women everywhere are embracing their true beauty. Straight hair is beautiful. Make-up is fabulous and fun; and natural hair can be exqusite.

This months spotlight is on Solange Knowles. Everyone knows Solange as being Beyonce's younger sister. A girl with her own sass and her own style. At first, she seemed a little miss placed walking in the huge shadow of her super star big sis Bey.
She fell into the hollywood funnel of beauty that so many other women of color slip into. Solange wore straight hair, wavy weaves, bright make-up and often displayed questionable style. All in an attempt to stand out and be herself. Now of course she didn't tell me this herself but a photo speaks a thousand words.

I guess, one day she finally had enough!

*****************************************************************************
The new Solange emerged beginning with her Big Chop!

From there this chick was fire breathing HAWTNESS!

Naturally beautiful. Exquiste class. Ecclectic style. A mix of retro and frilly looks makes this celeb an inspiring natural beauty and well deserving of this months spotlight. She embraced herself and in that embrace she found that she already had everything needed. Beauty is inside of you not in your make-up or the clothes you wear. Use these items to enhance what's there and you will find your fierce inner confidence to go along with your graceful stride.

Big Beautiful Curls

Some days my curls are lucious, big and bouncy and others they're very tamed with a professional appeal. Finally, I'm going on a 6 day vacation to Texas and I'm feeling a streak of wild with my short freedom. While I'm out of town I plan to let my mane blow in the wind.

Here's how...

You'll need:
* Spray bottle with water
* Your go to curling/styling creme or gel
* Blow dryer w/ diffuser

Let's get started...

1. Lightly spray your top layer of hair with water. Be care not to soak your hair or wet the under layer...Just dampen top layer around your crown, front, and sides.

2. Lightly rake the water through to the ends.

3. Lightly and gently rake through your styling creme from root to ends. (Not too hard. Don't pull out your hair and don't focus on tangles) I'm using Shea Moisture Curling Pudding and a little bit of the Curling Souffle for hold as my styling cremes.

4. Now diffuse, diffuse, diffuse. Medium to low speed, NO HEAT...cool setting only. Diffuse the sides, back, and top. Flip your head over and diffuse all around upside down for lots of volume and body.

That's it. Enjoy your lucsious curls. I know I will.

I also posted a video demonstration. Enjoy.

Cute Manicure Design

I came across this photo online. This is a very cute look. Many of you may not know that I'm a license nail technician so nails is my thing my trade. I just want to share this pic and will be doing a tutorial very soon on how to create this Manicure at Home. Enjoy!

Beware of HEAT DAMAGE!

Hi all,

So big NEWS just in, Hot off the presses! We ALL know the harm of relaxers but do we really understand the harm of heat damage? Just to clue you in, its affects can be traumatizing to your locks, and defeat for your natural curls. How do I know? Because my hair is living proof!

I have told my story before but just to recap...Beyonce's weaves were reincarnate on my head for years! If she was the Weave Queen then I was her protege! My weaves were big, long, and HOT! So was the flat iron I used daily to straighten the front of my hair. Blending my natural curls with my weaves daily = Heat!

Once I was done with the weaves I began my natural hair journey but I still blow dried my hair a few times a month and straightened for length checks = Heat! I still sat under hooded dryers for roller sets = Heat!

The result are limp curls.

I made the picture large so you could see all the straight pieces. Now I am on a no heat journey along with a waist length challenge. I would rather long curls than long straight hair. Heat damage can come from flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers, even hooded dryers.

The answer is to stop these things if you want to have bouncy luscious curls. The fact is straight hairs among your curls is not cute.

So the damage is done what do I do now?
  • I got a trim (3 inches of heat damage gone)
  • Now I stop the heat styling all together.
  • I do routine deep conditions once a week to bring back moisture.
  • I do a protein treatment every 6 weeks to bring structure back to my curls.
  • I do braids and twist to remind my hair of its natural curl
But I still want to wear my hair straight sometime what do I do?

Do roller sets. Once you have set your hair with curlers use a hooded dryer on low or medium heat to dry.

Or you can use the low or medium heat setting and dry your hair for only half the time and allow your hair to air dry the rest of the way.

I would rather have long beautiful natural curls than ratty looking curls. If you are still at a lose get a wig and rock it like its your hair!
