Hair Must Haves!

On my natural hair journey my product closet has changed. There are a few must haves that I need to aid in heathly natural hair growth. Every kinky curly girl should have:
  • Extra Vrigin Olive Oil
    • This oil is considered an essential oil and can act as a conditioner, and hot oil treatment. The great thing about evoo is it actually penetrates the hair shaft moisterizing beyond the outer layer of your hair producing healthier shiney looking hair. Another good thing is you can find evoo at any store.
  • A wide tooth comb
    • This can help you retain length by not yanking out every knot and nap in your hair. Using a wide tooth comb will make the detanling process easier and leave you losing way less hair.
  • Silcone Free Conditioner
    • There are so many conditioners on the market but us curly girls need conditioner that will do just that "conditon" our hair. Therefore using a silicone free conditioner will penetrate the hair shaft and condition from the inside out. Where can you find a cone free conditioner? Anywhere! Here are a list of cone free conditioners and a great explanation from Lady Long Hair http://sites.google.com/site/ladylonghair/'cone-freeconditioners
  • A plastic cap
    • Plastic caps are always a must. They protect your hair from gettting wet in the shower when you want your locks to stay dry. Plastic caps lock in heat while deep conditioning and are used for most overnight methods like the baggy method, greenhouse method, etc...
  • Satin cap
    • Use your satin cap EVERY NIGHT!!  You should be wrapping and protecting your hair every night with your satin cap or satin bonnet. Not only does pillow friction dry your hair out but it also can cause breakage. Treat your locks to a soft night's sleep.
  • Lastly, are Hair accessories
    • A natural girl's best friend. Hair accessories are anything from ponytail holders (not rubber bands-big no, no) head bands, hair clips, flowers, fancy scarves and more. Dress your kinks up with colors accessories to help get you through your hairs toughest and even prettiest days.

Day 2 of No Heat Challenge!

Hi,

So I am not going to do an update everyday about this challenge but I will every now and then. I just wanted to give everyone an idea of what types of protective styles I will be wearing during the week M-F. I work in a very professional atmosphere so I can't really wear "afro-centric" hair. And the days that I do push the limits my hair is noticed...LOL. Most days I do a phony bun. You can purchase a fake bun from any beauty supply store for $10 bucks.

I simply put some EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) on my ends and JAM on the front and back of my hair. Slick it up into a bun using a very SOFT brush to smooth my edges. If your hair is thicker you can use a comb (not wide tooth). Don't brush or comb to the ends of your hair just enough to smooth the edges.

I put my ponytail in. I braid the length. Wrap the braid into a bun and place the fake bun over top of my little braided nute. I then use extra hair pens for better hold. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure you purchase a bun large enough to fit over your own bun.

There you have a professional  protective style that is sleek can literally be done in 5 mins or less. Enjoy my pics below. Throw on some cute earrings an interesting head band and wah-lah! Thanks guys.

Hair Chop!

Ok so good news and bad news. The good news is I got a trim. The bad news is it was 6 months of growth gone! This is roughly 3 inches of hair. I went to the salon and asked for a trim and the stylist insisted that I had major dead ends. Yes I could see the dead ends but I wanted to cut them off slowly. Well she called herself showing me everything she was cutting but it turned out to be alot shorter than I expected. So now I went from below bra stap length to arm pit length. Sucks big time! Oh well now that all the heat damage and the last bit of color is trimmed from my ends I am now going to take a new challenge along with my waist length challenge.

NO MORE HEAT! I know this is extreme but I am an extrem-ist sometimes. All or nothing. But I am going to be rational. Right now  my hair is all one length (finally) so, my goal is by Feb 20 (exactly 2 months from today) to grow 1 1/2 inches of hair. My hair is currently 15 inches on the top and sides and 11 inches at the nape. This will be my routine to help my goal:

  • No heat at all!
  • Condition wash once a week
  • Deep condition once a week
  • Wear a protective style during the week M-F
  • Take a vitamin daily to aid in healthy hair growth
